CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“Ah! Ah! Wait right there.”

Edgar had hitched a ride from Little Gitano as far as Eileen’s path to the road. He was in the midst of his usual five-minute personal strategy session on the way to the house. He’d been so focused on figuring out how to get pictures of the kids to his mother that he didn’t immediately see Zilkat cutting across the field toward him.

Edgar slung his rucksack up higher on his shoulders and waited, as instructed.

Zilkat had his hair pulled back for a change, likely because he’d been in the garden again. Alicia had breathlessly told Edgar a story about Zilkat getting his hair tangled in some trellis work and how dramatic he’d been about losing a single strand to the project.

“I’ve got a question.” Standing at the edge of the path in peculiarly tinted tangerine coveralls, Zilkat settled his fists onto his hips.

“Not a gardening question, I hope. I can’t help you with those.”

“No. The gardening’s fine. Even when I fail, I learn something from the error. Odd how that works, hmm?”

“Not so odd. I enjoy the little failures sometimes. You understand better through experience. That’s education in a nutshell. Or at least, it should be that way.”

“I wouldn’t know. My educational history isn’t what you’d call illustrious. I pay people to do smart things for me.” Canting his head, Zilkat angled his weight onto one foot and narrowed his eyes.

Edgar didn’t know if he trusted that expression. Zilkat was in cahoots with Eileen, which meant that he probably knew far more of Edgar’s business than Edgar wanted him to. Or worse—not enough of the right things.

He held his tongue, though, knowing better than to dangle bait Zilkat may not have even been craving.

“Your brow ridge,” Zilkat said.

Reflexively, Edgar furrowed his forehead. “What of it?”

“Distinctive.”

“In what way?”

Zilkat gave his hand a noncommittal wiggle. “Perhaps it’s ethnic. I do not know. We Jekhans are told we still resemble some Romani groups, so I would know those faces well, but I can’t sort the rest.”

“Hard to do anyway. Earth populations are becoming increasingly less homogenous. My people are from Persia, though, also Pakistan and Afghanistan. Middle East. Not too far from where your distant Terran ancestors migrated from a millennium ago.”

“Ah. Perhaps that is why so many Jekhan men find you attractive,” Zilkat murmured absently, rubbing his chin.

Edgar lifted an eyebrow. That was probably the first he’d ever heard of what Jekhan men thought about him, though he hadn’t exactly been seeking the information.

Returning his hand to its hip, Zilkat refined his focus on Edgar, and said, “Babies don’t look like people. But Henry looks like you.”

Does he?

If not for his extensive training in going undercover, Edgar might have shown a reaction, either large or small. Despite his dread of having his secrets aired, he remained perfectly still, giving the other man the most vacant stare possible.

“I don’t think that’s coincidental,” Zilkat said.

“What do you think explains it, if not coincidence?”

Zilkat shrugged. “All I know is that
